A fairy tale about two pirates Žvanda and Planda, who were swallowed by a whale...
...as punishment, because they are “rascals who do not know hard work”. Only a magical star that the whale also swallowed can help them escape the whale’s belly. Little Star wants to help them, but only if the whale’s belly is “like in a nursery”. So the lazy and messy pirates make a chair (with the help of a hammer and a saw), paint the walls in the nursery, and even sew curtains. Eventually, they find that they actually quite enjoy the job. And the last thing?
“Everyone looks and wonders
at the wonderous whale.
It waddles, and sails the world
we show it to the children.”
In the play by Iva Peřinová, whose dramatic work has become a “puppetry classic”, we find an abundance of fantasy, puppetry, and acting. At the same time, it also carries a message about the meaningfulness of a creative approach to life, which is certainly necessary in today’s age.
