A Miser, a Glutton and a Wretch! Kubula and Kuba Kubikula!
The book by Vladislav Vančura has long belonged to the so-called golden fund of modern children’s literature and we also know it from the Večerníček TV series. However, different scripts were written for the stage version at an earlier time. After all, the Radost Theatre featured Kubula with a script written by Josef Kovalčuk over thirty years ago.
The contemporary adaptation by the musician and director Tomáš Kočko, enriches Vančura’s story by adding a distinctive musical component without deviating from the plot. So, once again, the bear keeper Kuba Kubikula walks the Earth with his bear Kubula, a fidget, sweet tooth and rascal. During a harsh winter, they seek shelter for the night in a blacksmith’s workshop, where Kubula befriends the blacksmith’s daughter Lízinka. But a ghost Barbucha is also ‘born’, and the bear keeper tells Kubula about him to stop him being naughty. However, Kubula becomes afraid, very afraid, which makes Barbucha suddenly appear and say to them that because they conjured him up then it will not leave them alone and will follow them everywhere. And so the three have all kinds of adventures together, which the youngsters in the audience will be able to participate in during this production – and what happens next? They stay together, even with their friend Lízinka! Kubula starts school, Kuba Kubikula learns with the blacksmith and Barbucha eventually magically turns into a loyal and happy dog.
